ZIM FACTS
ZIM is the shortest Irken ever to become an Invader. Since the very day he was born (or hatched), he has brought nothing but terror to his people while remaining entirely oblivious to his deeds actually being horrible.
IRKEN FACTS
Irkens are a bloodthirsty race that exists to do but one thing: Conquer.
PAK FACTS
The I.D. PAK every Irken gets fused with right after birth is far more than just a simple backpack storing all sorts of incredible alien technology. In fact, the PAK is the Irken's brain. It holds their personality, high scores, power as well as the entire knowledge of all Irkens before them, granting each Irken access to a vast amount of knowledge.
Gets the PAK dislodged from the Irken body, the body will expire and die within ten minutes. Even if replaced at the very last second, the already detoriating Irken body gets completely rejuvenated as soon as the PAK gets replaced.
When removed, the PAK will attempt to find a new host. One may keep in mind, however, that the PAK is only compatible with Irken bodies and would end up destroying any other organism is may attach itself to.

Seeing that the PAK keeps them alive and even reanimates the Irken body when it may very well be dead, I am assuming it is also responsible for the rather quick healing and durability the Irken body shows. Further, the apparent presence of a charging cell seems to explain ZIM's claim that Irkens don't sleep ['Roboparents gone Wild']. Personal assumption is, that Irkens do, indeed, not need sleep as we know it, but rather rest as in recharge their PAK as it keeps the body moving.
The body's brain itself does not have any real personality on its own, seeing as Irken bodies are hooked up to their PAK mere moments after hatching. It is as Dib said, nothing but a shell to carry the PAK around.

UNFINISHED EPISODES
Due to the early cancelation of Invader ZIM, several episodes remained unfinished, but the scripts to them as well as some audio recordings can be found on several corners of the web. As I personally find these quite interesting, I will link the scripts here for everyone to read who actually wants to do so.

The Tallest try to get rid of ZIM by having him put on a trial to have his life judged and his existence evaluated. Meanwhile, GIR takes over the Earth.
